“The end of our Silk Road journey” Krishnad’s photos around Almaty, Kazakhstan

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Almaty, Kazakhstan by TravelPod blogger Krishnad titled “The end of our Silk Road journey”. TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Krishnad’s travel blog entry: “It was hard to tear ourselves from Heaven Lake. This was also our last day in China, and we went straight to the airport for the two hour flight to Almaty, Kazakhstan. During our time in Xinjiang Auonomous region, we have had no contact with the outside world. The government have blocked emails, text messages and international phone calls. The Uighurs have little hope against a goverment that is so all powerful. But then, this is how China has been, ever since the time of the First Emperor. The population has always had to live under immense political and social control. In so many ways this has been the strength of China, and allowed so much progress in recent years. But the price is high. Almaty was just a days stopover so that we could catch our International flights on the 27th. We spent the day exploring – so strange to be in a completely different environment after three weeks travelling through China. We spent some time in a very nice park: The 28 Panfilov Heroes Memorial Park which honours the men from Kazakhstan who died on the battlefields of the 2nd World War against Nazi fascism. There is an ‘eternal flame’ by the war memorial where schoolchildren put flowers on the last day of school, and newlyweds also come to have their photos taken there. In
